Howard Brown Health exists to eliminate the disparities in healthcare experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people through research, education and the provision of services that promote health and wellness. The Social Services department of HBH were looking for a partner to develop a series of training and education programs focused on facing race and racism within healthcare among social workers, admins, and organizational leaders.
We developed a comprehensive series of programs focused on bringing an intersectional lens to the ways racism is embedded into LGBTQIA+ communities. Our tiered approach to education focused on bringing various staff members and leaders together to build capacity not codependency in engaging in conversations about macroaggresions, power, privilege, identity, and positionality.
The program was effective in helping teams to broach conversations specific to race and identity across various levels of power and leadership in the organization.
